A week after facing embarrassment for its insensitivity towards a patient, Hyderabad's famous Gandhi General Hospital is back in news for giving expired injections to at least eight kids. These kids in the pediatric ward had viral fever on Saturday (March 26), hence were given the injections that had 2016 expiry date.
After the incident, the hospital management constituted a three-member enquiry committee. The state government also took serious view of the episode and ordered an external enquiry. Initial enquiry found out that the injection bottles had no government emblem and hospital stamp, hinting at some conspiracy by bringing from private sources. Hospital authorities said that three doctors have been assigned to check the injection bottles, question the hospital staffs and the injection suppliers.
The worried parents said that soon after the children were given the injections, some started vomiting while others became unconscious. However, all of them are recovering and have been declared out of danger.
Telangana director of medical education, Dr M Ramani, ordered an external enquiry by doctors from MGM hospital, Warangal and the prestigious Niloufer Children's Hospital, Hyderabad. "The committee has been asked to give report by Monday evening. We will take action based on the findings,” she said.
The authorities suspect a conspiracy to defame Gandhi hospital in particular and weaken the public sector health system in general.
"We will enquire into all recent allegations on the functioning of the hospital," Dr Ramani said.
It may be recalled that a patient last week used his son's toy cycle to reach the plastic surgery ward on the first floor, unable to pay the bribe to provide him a wheel chair, which is the right of any patient. The hospital washed off its hands by terminating two contract workers from service and giving the patient some personal benefits.
The Telangana health ministry took action against a doctor and two nurses in connection with injecting expired doses to eight children at the Gandhi General Hospital.
Health Minister, Dr Lakshma Reddy, directed the hospital authorities to suspend them with immediate effect.
